When I woke up on Thursday morning, I didn’t stay under the duvet loafing about and moaning as I’m used to doing, even if the alarm clock rang an hour earlier than usual… I leapt to my feet, absolutely thrilled at the perspective of going to the Printemps where I had been invited to discover the preview Christmas windows. It was like going to Disneyland Resort for a day, but even better.
For I never miss the Christmas windows, you see, I just looooove it, and even if I have to defy the offended looks of parents with their brats who consider that I have nothing to chuck there, I go every year.
This year, Russia is honoured in France: the “Maison Chanel”, Victoire de Castellane and John Galliano for Dior imagined small dolls dressed in Russian-inspired costumes that will come to life in the animated windows of the Printemps. Here are some images of the Chanel dolls (among which hide pictures of golden pants…), I shall leave it to you to discover the Dior dolls on the day of the opening of the windows!

Sidling in those windows with my camera to see all these people working was quite a unique moment. While I was getting excited on my camera, shooting the small Russian dolls and their large eyes like crazy without thinking much, I realized that Jean Claude Dehix, the “string puppeteer” who gives life to all this small world, was standing next to me. I then learnt that the animated shop windows are a French speciality as it was his father who first got the idea of replacing the hands of puppeteers by engines. His family business has been behind absolutely each and every animated shop window of the boulevard Haussmann ever since.

This year is somewhat special for the Printemps as its façade is finally restored: the tarpaulins still hiding the result will be removed on November 12th at 19.30. For this occasion, the Printemps will give an apparently mind-blowing show on these famous fronts that will last the whole evening (a crazy son et lumière show, I’m looking forward to seeing it). I will be there, don’t miss it!!
PS: the animated shop windows will open on Thursday :)
